SiFi Networks Shortlisted for Business Green Technology Awards

SiFi Networks has been selected as a finalist for the Future City Technology category at the Business Green Technology awards hosted in London.

SiFi Networks has been shortlisted for its internationally patented Waste Water Fiber technology, a solution that provides an alternative to conventional core fiber installation techniques by running the cables through the sewers. Although this technology does not completely replace conventional techniques, it can be used very effectively to reduce costs, shorten deployment time, create a more secure network and minimize disruption to local communities.

The award recognizes cutting edge innovations that promise to drastically boost the resource efficiency of urban environments. The judges are looking for technologies that can integrate into the smart or future City vision and deliver a wide range of benefits.

Wichita is one of the first US Cities to utilize SiFi Networks’ Waste Water technology. The network infrastructure uses existing storm and sewer conduits and has now completed many years of uninterrupted service.

“In 2012, the City of Wichita’s IT Department worked with SiFi Networks to implement a proof of concept in utilizing fiber connectivity through our existing storm or sewer conduits.

Fiber was placed between a Public Works facility (where the City had existing fiber) and a Police Sub-station with additional connection to a Public Works Water Center close by. City IT has not touched this network in over three years since implementation.” Commented Michael Mayta, Chief Information Officer at the City of Wichita.

“After review, Public Works confirmed that there were no negative effects on any conduits utilized and our Water and Police sub-station have benefited from the throughput of a GIG network. The ROI for this project was just over four years, so in late 2016 the project will “pay out” and the City will begin to realize monthly savings.” Added Mayta.

The awards will take place on December 1st at the Savoy Place in London.
