New laser promises drastic network improvements

Monday, November 11, 2019

A new “pure” laser designed by CalTech researchers has created commotion amongst tech fans and businesses around the world. This news arose following a study being published in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on January 9th, 2014.

Notable for its remarkably high spectral purity, this new laser holds the potential for higher data transfer speeds due to drastic improvements in its design and structure. In short, the purer the tone transmitted through the fiber, the more information it can carry; when developing the fiber, the CalTech researchers tried to come as close to absolute purity as is possible.

It’s rumoured that these new lasers could provide internet connections 20-times faster than what we have now. Reports also indicate this new technology could replace the lasers that communications companies have been using for the last 40 years in their fibre optic deployments.

Fiber optic networks are quickly becoming a must-have in communities across the US and around the world. Small improvements in this type of technology can have substantial positive effects on both business and residential communication abilities. SiFi Networks would welcome the further development and commercial availability of the technology , which would have a positive impact on the way in which it designs its networks.
